These are our game recommendations for the second half of August 2018.
This is the Quiet Stories’ Book Club, a monthly series where we challenge you to beat at least one of the games on our list. We’ll have expansive and time consuming games, for gamers on a limited budget. We’ll have smaller, more digestible titles, for gamers with little spare time. We’ll showcase a variety of genres and platforms. We’ll recommend the newest, most talked about games, and some older titles that you probably heard about but didn’t give the time of day to. The point is, we’ll have something to cater to everyone’s needs. Hopefully you’ll end up trying something new or discover a hidden gem.
Saints Row 4: Re-Elected
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC
- Estimated Time to Finish: 27 Hours
Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third are two of the best open world games of last generation. Saints Row 4 and its current gen port Re-Elected aren’t quite as good. The choice to focus on over the top super powers made much of what the series was known for irrelevant, but it’s still a fun and absolutely absurd time waster, especially with the inclusion of all the games DLC.
Fuzion Frenzy
- Platforms: Xbox One
- Estimated Time to Finish: 4 Hours
Looking for a fun party game? Fuzion Frenzy is a title from the original Xbox, brought back to life through backwards compatibility on the Xbox One. It’s assortment of mini games are a blast to play with a bunch of friends, and provided Kinda Funny with an awesome episode of Party Mode.
Riptide GP: Renegade
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Mobile
- Estimated Time to Finish: 6 Hours
Maybe you’re looking for a racing game, but want something more bombastic than Forza. Renegade is a fast paced, futuristic, urban Jet Ski game, where you drive vehicles similar to Destiny’s sparrows. It’s a bit light on content, but its unique premise was enough to draw me in.
Mario Tennis: Aces
- Platforms: Switch
- Estimated Time to Finish: 7 Hours
I genuinely don’t understand how Nintendo is so good at creating local multiplayer games? Like Mario Kart 8, Aces is addictive and manages to nail the perfect balance of fun and competitiveness. The single player mode is enjoyable for a few hours, but multiplayer is where this gem shines. If you were put off by the general consensus that this game is too hard, don’t worry. As someone who can barely get past the first level of Bloodborne, I found Aces a breeze.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC
- Estimated Time to Finish: 2 Hours
You have no excuse to not play this great, two hour, narrative experience. Why? Because it’s absolutely free! This standalone title manages to tackle fairly serious issues like alcoholism, while giving us a taste of what’s to come in Life is Strange 2.
Assassin’s Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC
- Estimated Time to Finish: 4.5 Hours
If you’re itching to get your hands on Odyssey, but are disappointed that you won’t be playing as Bayek or Aya, I urge you to play The Hidden Ones. This DLC pack for last year’s entry in the AC series provides a new location, new outfits and a meaningful tale into the origins and expansion of the Brotherhood.
